What insurance does the type D visa require?

A Spanish policy with repatriation cover, no co-payments, from an insurer licensed in Spain, for the whole declared stay. Assistance policies (travel-style) are not accepted.

Can I buy insurance from my home country?

Only if it's a Spanish insurer (Sanitas, Adeslas, DKV, Mapfre, etc.) with a Spanish licence. International travel policies are usually rejected by the consulate.

How much does a yearly policy cost?

Roughly €350–650 per year for a student aged 20–35 without chronic conditions. Policies with dental care and specialists included cost more.
